Let Us Begin

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today.

My family…

Meet My Family

Just when we thought life was settling into a comfortable and somewhat predictable routine, God laughed.  You know what they say about telling Him your plans.

As it turns out, a new vision for our future is being revealed that promises to shake things up a bit.  We are not exactly sure where the glorious unknown will lead but are hopeful and excited nonetheless.   More than anything, we are just trying to be faithful.

This is our story, a lot of the ordinary day-to-day alongside my deep thoughts about the things that matter most, all as we strive to discern God’s will and live this life He has given to the full.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. -Joshua 24:15

Me: Alison, Ali, Momma

Anyone who has spent any amount of time with me knows that I have a tendency to be passionate about a lot of things, nothing more than my Catholic faith and love of the Lord.  Walking with Jesus has taken me places I never dreamed of from the Franciscan University of Steubenville where I majored in Theology and Catechetics to mission work in Jamaica, Thailand, China and Belize. (You can read about my adventures in Central America on my first venture into the blogisphere here.)

A lot has happened since my days as missionali.  I followed Johnny into the desert of Arizona where I have been working full-time as the RCIA director at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church for the past five years.  It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of the conversion process for those seeking Jesus in His Church and to witness the healing and transformation of hearts through the sacraments.  I am also in the midst of my internship year as a Creighton Model FertilityCare Practitioner.  It is an exciting work to build the culture of life and offer couples groundbreaking alternatives to artificial reproductive technologies.

Second only to God is my fabulous vocation as a wife to the love-of-my-life and mother of my precious boys.  There is a lot going on these days but home is definitely and always where my heart is.  My family is my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  If things go the way it looks now, I could be the mother of many more.  I have no doubt that the best is yet to come.

Jesus, I trust in You!

Johnny: My Rock, Daddy, Doctor (well almost)

Johnny is a fun loving, adventure seeking, mountain moving, family man known for his ready smile, contagious laugh, and curly red hair.  (It’s gotten a lot tamer over the years.)  Always ready to fight for a worthy cause and promote the good of mankind, Johnny is passionate about serving the Church and community.  Juggling ministry, a full course load and clinical rotations during his final year of naturopathic medical school, he somehow manages to keep family a priority and always puts the boys and me first.  They adore him and want to be just like him and I wouldn’t mind that one bit.  I am so grateful that he is the one I get to journey through this life with.  Can you tell I’m crazy about him?   Yeah, just a little.

Us – Our Story

I like impossible situations.  That way, if it works out, you know it was meant to be.  -Johnny

These were the words that began our very impractical romance on New Year’s Day in 2006. He lived in California and was finishing an undergrad in Arizona.  My family was in Pennsylvania while I was living as a Catholic missionary in Central America.  The odds of us even meeting much less starting a relationship were highly unlikely.  The fact that we would begin not knowing when or if I would return to the States bordered on insanity.  But as my brother Adam who plotted to bring us together told me, “This guy is perfect for you.  You would be crazy not to at least give him a chance.”

In less than a week, Johnny had already booked a flight to visit me over spring break and I started to dare hoping that we might actually work out.  When he not only wanted to see the sights in that tropical paradise but jumped right into service (spending time with my students, initiating impromptu games of soccer on the beach, co-leading retreats, accompanying me on house calls and hospital visits to my beloved Belizeans), I was done for.  Seeing him with them made me fall in love with him and well, as they say, the rest is history.

So as it turns out, brother knows best and I think I owe him for life. Johnny is indeed “perfect for me” in more ways than I could have ever hoped for.   Impossible though it seemed, every obstacle that very easily could have ended us before we began was cast aside and it all seemed so effortless.  If there is anything I have learned from our story it is that if God is behind something, it will indeed work out regardless of the circumstances or what common sense may dictate.  That lesson proved at our very start has served us well.  I have a feeling it will continue to be a foundational truth in trusting what He has ordained for our future.

John Cummins IV ~ Jack: Jack-Jack, Jack Knife, Cadillac Jack, Super Jack

I will never forget the moment we found out that we were expecting Jack.  It was the feast of the Epiphany and the greatest gift two newlyweds could hope for.  My heart was instantly transformed to love like only a mother can and we went from being a couple to a family.  Even before I laid eyes on him and first held him in my arms on September 20, 2008, I was completely and totally, head-over-heels in love.  He has been my delight ever since.

Jack is constantly making me laugh and surprising me with the unbelievably hilarious things that come out of his mouth.  He is one incredibly articulate two year old which is no surprise considering the fact that his very first word was “turtle” clear as day at only 9 months old.  He loves to learn and is always tackling new things.  This kid is forever on the go and doesn’t let any grass grow under his feet. He is the definition of extrovert, considering everyone he meets a friend and being happiest when surrounded by family, especially his best friend and cousin Norah (Mowah).  He is a joyful and affectionate big brother to “his Gabriel” and wants nothing more than to “be just like Daddy” or maybe a superhero when he gets big.  He loves the Lord and has the sweetest spirituality teaching me just what a childlike faith looks like.

Gabriel James: Babriel, Baby Gaby, Mister Man, Momma’s Boy

Born November 11, 2010, Gabriel James is my bouncing baby boy.  This little guy has been full of life and making his very strong will known from day one.  A lover of all things boy, his baby heart is always seeking adventure, wanting to be in the center of the action, and never missing a thing.  Oblivious to the fact that Jack is two years older than he is, Gabriel is his big brother’s shadow, lighting up when he enters the room and thinking absolutely everything he does is awesome.  This bottomless pit enjoys nothing more than to wrestle, climb, and explore his surroundings as long as Momma is within sight.  I love seeing him grow more into his name with each day that goes by as the “strong man of God”.

Kolbe Michael & Veronica Marie: Our Little Saints

My little loves were created for heaven, with a purpose that far surpasses this momma’s understanding…

Jesus called Kolbe home at only 7.5 weeks gestation on February 16, 2010 and Veronica a year and a half later at 6.5 weeks gestation on October 17, 2011.

Only with us in body for a short while, Kolbe and Veronica are very much a part of our family and in our hearts forever.  There is not a day that goes by that we do not seek our little patrons’ intercession to help us grow in holiness so that we might one day join their ranks among the angels and saints in paradise. What a great and glorious homecoming it will be with our sweet children waiting to welcome us into God’s throne room.

Baby Kolbe and Baby Veronica, pray for us.

Hello from one Catholic mommy to another! :) I wanted to congratulate you on your upcoming adoption of sweet baby girl. What a wonderful blessing for you and your family! I would love to follow your blog, but I can’t seem to find a way to do so (either Google, Facebook, email, etc). Chances are the following options are somewhere ridiculously obvious and I’ve just missed it, but could you point me in the right direction? Thanks and God bless!

Hi Marisa, you haven’t missed it. It isn’t a built in option with this WordPress design that I’m using to have followers or a subscribe button so I just need to take a minute to search how to add one myself and haven’t done it yet. Thank you for your interest though. I will try to do it soon! – Alison
